With hydroponics, an inert growing medium takes the place of soil in traditional gardening. Hydroponic growing media are called inert because unlike soil, they don’t provide plants with the basic elements of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium that plants require for growth, but simply provide structure to allow the roots to support the plant, and a delivery vehicle for a nutrient solution tailored to your crop’s specific needs. Different inert media will require different watering strategies depending on their absorbency and their relative air-to-water retention ratios; consult with our staff for expert advice on which medium and nutrient protocol is best for your purposes.
